I had a similar problem, infact identical, when I tried to upgrade 6.1, to 6.2, and it was i386,
so then I also tried a fresh install, using 6.2 i386, and still, startx would not run,

When I tried 6.2 amd64, everything went well, startx worked, so I proceeded with installing my WM, etc,... It was so long ago, I had forgotten about that,...
