It appears that the dvd+rw-tools developer did not have BD-RE hardware to recreate the reported problem with growisofs, and recommended xorriso as a possible solution. dvd+rw-tools is not actively developed, its last update was in 2008.
OpenBSD has a package of xorriso.
I know nothing about the software tool, but a quick browse of its features indicates it is for CD9660 file systems, it does not apparently support UDF.
