The i386 is notably different then the later generations of x86, go through the commit logs and see how many i386 kludges were removed.

I still own a couple 486 systems, they're unlikely to remove support for that family any time soon.. some embedded systems still have 486 class processors.

All 3 of the major projects no longer support the 386, I say it's a good thing..
