Although Firewire is a faster protocol when compared to USB, only Apple has embraced it. The number of hardware products featuring Firewire are dwindling.

In theory, yes. Once you add true network stacks to the equation, Layer 6
(Presentation layer) deals specifically with byte order differences of the end points. Note however that this assumes that both ends are functioning as full network stacks.
