The only really supported upgrade path between major versions is: upgrade to the latest X.y release, then update to Z.0, then update to Z.a.
IOW, go from 5.x to 5.5, then to 6.0, then to 6.3.
That's the only upgrade path that is guaranteed to work. You can skip over the upgrade to the x.0 release, but you do so at your own risk.
