What 18Googol2 likely meant by 'console' was to press control+alt+F2 to switch to vtty1 and so on to reach a virtual console; which is more or less what gnome-terminal 'fakes'. Log in and attempt to run console capable programs (e.g. ping somehost, vi somefile, blah blah)
