The message about no audio function groups doesn't disturb the audio system- this is normal- on my T61 I have the same and sound works- including the Pulseaudio etc.
The thing that might be distorting the sound is the mixer settings- I am sure that smething should be muted. But this may be checked only by the owner of that laptop. Normally T61 doesn't offer a sound unless I change some mixetctl variables.
