Unhappy [semi-SOLVED] sound suddenly stopped working

Does anyone have a clue why such a thing can happen?
I am currently building thunderbird, but I don't think that has anything to do with it (I'm doing it the second time right now, because I forgot a build option the first time).
As it happened I was watching a webm video on youtube. As soon as the video finished sound stopped working; cmus said this: "Error: opening audio device: Operation not supported by device".
There is nothing in dmesg or /var/log/messages, and I can't find any mixer programs anymore
(I've used find, not just relied on them being in $PATH).

I just remember that i said `pkg_delete -A thunderbird` earlier, could that have deleted something sound-related?

Update:
After reinstalling thunderbird my sound works again... does anyone have an idea why? mixerctl is back too.
