No where in my answer did I say there was a connection between X's copy buffers &
vi(1)'s registers. The OP asked for ways to copy a large range from one file to another. If both files are opened in
vi(1)'s buffers. the commands supplied will work just fine.
And for the record, the commands I quote have been part of
vi(1) since its inception. No
vim(1)'isms are involved.
