I used to set this (and maybe -z, I don’t remember) to a low value in order to get rid of audio lag in games, but stopped due to getting lots of audio stuttering in mplayer. I’m not really sure how to intelligently choose the values so that doesn’t happen. You may want to ask ratchov@ (the main audio developer) for advice.
