If your system has a dedicated headphones jack, it may be auto-muted by default..

Type:
$ mixerctl -a | grep headphones
If outputs.headphones.mute is "on", set it to "off", and attempt to adjust the volume if it's too low.

Note, If this is the headphones jack on your CD/DVD-ROM drive, make sure you connected the internal analog audio cable to your sound card.
