Posting to add, X Windows will only find a mouse if the kernel finds one. Check your dmesg(8) for the keyword "mouse":
$ dmesg | grep mouse
Regardless of physical connection, a mouse should attach to the kernel via the wsmouse(4) driver, so you should see wsmouse mentioned in the dmesg.
