In some ways you have to compare age with where computers were at the time. When I started programming in 1975, we were still on punched cards and serial terminals were in their infancy -- only upper division EECS majors got to use them (I was neither). Going back much farther does not really add to one's knowledge of computer history and how things developed. Compare that with the young'uns who know only GUIs and the OSS/Windows "struggle."
