I find this hard to believe. Maybe it's simply something in your (user) configuration. Have you tried renaming
~/.opera, then running Opera and letting it recreate the profile?

Opera being proprietary software, it's very likely (I haven't checked) that the FreeBSD port just grabs the official archive file and extracts it as it is.
