What's the output of uname -a on your system?

You need to be running FreeBSD 7.1 to have support for that chipset.
This is the part I was not aware of. DesktopBSD is lagging behind PC-BSD in terms of which FreeBSD it's based on, so that's most likely the explanation. Thanks! DesktopBSD v1.6 is based on FreeBSD v6.3-RC2, so this means that I can kiss DBSD goodbye for the time being. At least it's good to know why.
