Actually some of us prefer the Book of Genesis way, "Hey Eve, ..." ;p.
The only software along those lines that I have used, is a Windows program called Eyeball Chat. Since Skype is proprietary, I would check out Ekiga and Empathy. The former afaik, is the only program that supports my usual cross-platform needs.
Generally, I rely on TeamSpeak for VoIP needs: since I don't have a webcam, nor do I usually wish to be "Seen". A better cross platform solution would be Mumble: if webcams are not in the picture so to speak.
