Thanks for the reply! I don't expect you to be an expert on DesktopBSD, but I do expect DesktopBSD to be not totally unlike FreeBSD. I've looked into your hints; here's the outcome copied :
Code:
klaymen# kldstat -v | grep if_re
klaymen# kldstat -v | grep if_
                126 pci/if_ath
                127 cardbus/if_ath
                175 pci/if_ixgb
                341 if_faith
                342 if_gif
                344 if_ppp
                345 if_sl
                346 if_tun
 5 1 0xc0c2a000 9828 if_ipw.ko
 6 1 0xc0c34000 e6e4 if_iwi.ko
klaymen# kldload if_re
klaymen# echo 'if_re_load="YES"' >> /boot/loader.conf
kldload: can't load if_re: File exists
So I don't really know if the "File exists" was to be expected, but my feeling is, probably not. I'm trying to get a comparison of the dmesg outputs, but it's kinda tricky to copy from a non-networked pc.

Edit: Here are the dmesg's (I'm so glad these code boxes are made scrollable):
