I do:
ifconfig iwi0 chan 6 mediaopt monitor up ;
and sometimes dmseg shows
iwi0:could not load boot firmware
iwi0:timeout waiting for master
iwi0:iwi0 at pci2 dev 4 function 0 "Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG" rev 0x05: irq 11, address 00:0e:35:ed:98:b8
iwi0:could not load boot firmware
iwi0:timeout waiting for master
and iwi0 --> down
