Mac can do samba. Command k for go to server, then you can do smb://<server_ip>/share

You can also use ssh and probably nfs, as Mac is Unix--certified Unix no less.
At my last place, we just used samba and it worked quite well. The only caveat is that sometimes--not always, there would be problems if the user name on the BSD box was say, gcarson and it used the Mac default of GCARSON. I would always have the user change it to lower case.
