I think VLC versions above 1.0 swtiched from GTK to QT tool kits. OpenBSD developers hung on to 0.98 for a long time waiting for QT4. Note that KDE is still at Version 3.5.10. using QT3
I've tried Totem for Gnome and Parole for Xfce4 with good results. They both use gstreamer backends which are installed by default for gnome and xfce4. You may have to install the "bad" and "ugly" plugins to handle propriatary codecs.
