It could be that Matrox doesn't support DDC2/3 and/or your LCD monitor doesn't support DDC1.

DDC is an i2c bus that allows bidirectional communication between your monitor and the video card, it is needed for the driver to determine the maximum supported resolution.

If you can find an old Xorg.0.log from your newer system, you can find the Modeline and Vert/Horiz sizes and copy them into a xorg.conf on your older system.
