I heard that nonsense many times before. You need to increase refreshing rates. I have used VESA with the resolution 1600x1280 on the brand new DeLL laptop which comes with unsupported NVidia video card.
It is absolutely not true that VESA is limited to 800x600. Now if you are complaining about 3D acceleration and other goodies which usually come with real drivers that is another story and I agree 100% that VESA should be the tool of the last resort.
