Hmm... strange.
On my system, I plug in a WD Passport USB drive, and its device entry is listed in /dev/msdosfs/<VOLUME NAME>.
Then I do a mount_msdosfs /dev/msdosfs/<VOLUME NAME> /mnt/hdd and it works perfectly.
