I've used IRC for several years without any serious issues, but I also don't have much to hide ^_^. (I also prefer it for Group Chats)
if anyone actually hangs out in the room you've setup, I'll fire up one of my accounts and select a suitable XMPP client. XMPP/Jabber isn't perfect, but at least is it open, unlike many popular alterntives for general instant messenging ;-).
