I checked the link and the dicussion there was about hal. I dont't think my issue is related to hal. Anyway hal seems to be OK.

And there was a link in that thread that refers to making the IDE CD burner work on FreeBSD 5.x. The article states that the standard kernel for 5.x must be compiled from source. I am a very green newbie, I just want to make sure that compiling the kernel is the only way. Is it? My hope is that 7.0 kernel already contains the stuff that was missing in 5.x
