Most of them have extra software, but, as far as the computer is concerned, they are just Umass flash drives.
The software is just very ordinary ripping utilities, and even more ordinary media players. Usually best avoided, even if you are using a windows machine.
However, this is not universal, and there is generally no other way than plugging it in ans seeing what happens.
