Default Mounting an FS with no MBR/disklabel

Yesterday a coworker (Yes, it really was a coworker) reinstalled Windows for a customer without making a backup resulting in the complete loss of that company's complete administration.

One of the things I did/tried for recovery was running photorec, and stored the recovered stuff on a new hard disk.
I was in something of a hurry and just did newfs /dev/ad6, I didn't make a MBR or disklabel.

I can't seem to mount the filesystem now mount says ad6: Invalid argument. Maybe I am missing something very obvious ...
