If your new system still uses IDE and not SATA only, you can put both a hard disk and an CD/DVD drive on a single IDE cable. You have to make sure one is master and another slave.
You don't have fit the optical drive in the housing, just place it outside the housing on a book or something. I have done that many times for just installing
