@shep The mac is not mine, so fiddling with the boot options is rather frowned upon. That's partly what is causing this difficulty, the machines I have access to aren't mine and thus a lot of configurations that would have made this a great deal simpler aren't available to me.

It is possible during startup to select a boot device without making any BIOS changes. This would be a much easier route to take.
On my ASrock motherboard, F9 and my ASUS F8. The corrrect key usually is briefly listed at the bottom of the screen during startup..
I do not own a MAC but a websearch says the "Option" key
