Default My FreeBSD 6.3 Hardware

When I first got this machine off my dad it wouldn't even boot... no wonder he didn't mind trading me two small machines for my trusty P-4 1.7Ghz machine for them. I tried FreeBSD 7.0 on the machine I'm making this post on and it wouldn't get past placing Generic into the /boot directory. Then I tried FreeBSD 6.3 on it and it worked more or less perfectly... until I put Gnome on it and the hard drive started having seizures. I've got bad sectors everywhere to the point that the little 5GB IDE HDD in it can barely install BSD+Gnome2. Doesn't bug me, I get almost everything I need from the fileserver downstairs, so I don't need local copies of almost anything.

Oh yeah, CPU is an AMD K6-2 500Mhz with roughly 320Mb of RAM.
