Post OpenBSD Survey

Rather than bore you with my own Unix background, I offer this survey so that we all might know about your background. -Matt

OpenBSD User Survey: 10 Quick Questions

Respond to the 10 selections below as honestly as you are able. Then add up your points and see what category you fit into!

1. I use the following as my 'advanced' terminal, console, or shell on that other operating system:

a. I don't understand what you mean. You need to make it more understandable.
b. I use the DOS Command Prompt/Shell.
c. I use Cygwin's bash, MKS's ksh, or some similar shell.
d. None of the above. I do all my real work on Linux.
e. I don't use any 'other' OS. If it ain't OpenBSD Unix, I don't need it.

2. Regarding Linux:
a. I don't understand what you mean. You need to make it more understandable.
b. I've tried Linux but didn't like it
c. None of the above. I do all my real work on Linux.
d. I like Linux, but I'm giving OpenBSD Unix a fair chance.
e. I don't use any 'other' OS, including Linux. If it ain't OpenBSD Unix, I don't need it.

3. I acknowledge that, although they are certainly not the wave of the future, SunOS, SunView, Open Look, X/Motif and Solaris are:

a. I have no idea what you mean. No more of this stupid 'survey' for me. I have better things to do. I'm outta' here!
b. Something I've read about in history books.
c. Ancestors (sort of) to Linux.
d. Predecessors (sort of) to OpenBSD Unix.
e. Unixy stuff that I remember –
or: Unixy stuff that I worked with
or: cutting edge stuff (OK, 30 years ago) and they're the reason that I went back to the future with OpenBSD

4. The shell that I primarily use is:
a. Shell? Are we going to the beach?
b. Bourne
c. C-Shell
d. MKS or another shell
e. I've changed from the default Korne shell in OpenBSD to another shell (using chsh -s /usr/local/bin/new_shell_name USERNAME)

5. My OpenBSD desktop is:
a. What is a desktop?
b. Whatever comes with OpenBSD
c. I used FVWM, but tried, unsuccessfully, to switch over to {KDE, GNOME. You-fill-in-the-blank}
d. I used FVWM, but then I switched over to {KDE, GNOME. You-fill-in-the-blank}
e. Really not important. Give me a command line!

6. The way you re-size X-windows by grabbing the corner of the window is:
a. New to me. You mean I can re-size them?
b. Convenient.
c. Very intuitive.
d. Something that drives me crazy. I always try to re-size using the sides or top or bottom and only move the silly thing.
e. As it should be in every windowed OS.

7. The virtual desktop is:
a. What is a virtual desktop?
b. Hard to use.
c. Useful. But I’d like to make a given window “visible in all desktops”.
d. Neat. I use it all the time.
e. Really not important. Give me a command line; that’s what Ctrl-Z and bg %X are for!

8. It took a while but I got these to work:
a. Nothing. OpenBSD stinks.
b. A Web browser and an xterm
c. Most of the things that I want and need
d. All of the basic things that I want and need
e. Everything thing that I want and need – even suspend and hibernate!

9. I have set up these:
a. Nothing. OpenBSD stinks.
b. A few things
c. A lot of things, but I still need to do some more set-up.
d. All of the basic things that I want and need. I’m taking a break now!
e. Everything thing that I want and need – even servers (like a Web server and/or an email server)!

10. I use X programs:
a. What? What's an X program?
b. One or two. I can't remember which ones.
c. Two or three like xlock to lock my screen and the xfe file manager.
d. Several - xfe, xpat2, xlock, and xfce4-mixer and still more
e. I run those GUI-based programs from the command line, of course!

Congratulations, you're done!

Give yourself 1 point for each 'a' response.
Give yourself 2 points for each 'b' response.
Give yourself 3 points for each 'c' response.
Give yourself 4 points for each 'd' response.
Give yourself 5 points for each 'e' response.

0-10 points: Unix newbie that is probably a lost cause. BTW, Windows 10 is out!
11-24 points: Unix wannabe. There's hope for you yet. Keep plugging away!
25-34 points: Unix Weenie - Class Three. Be patient. It'll grow on you.
35-45 points: Unix Weenie – Class Two. You're Unix strong, but you still have a real life.
45-50 points: Unix Weenie – 1st Class. You're the weenie's weeny. You have no life outside of the computer and you like it that way just fine. You're well known on the forums and understand that most of those other forum users are beneath you (in skill-level and general knowledge).
