Normally, things like this have to do with drive ordering - the device nodes for the drives alter, meaning that the system cannot boot, because it is looking in the wrong places. A nice solution was provided in this post. These problems should not cause a system crash.

It is possible that the system is attempting to boot from the wrong drive, but to confirm that we would have to know where the system dies, and what, if any, error messages are given
