If you install using:
portinstall <portname>

Then you upgrade the port by using:
portupgrade <portname>

You should be using the command:
portsnap fetch update

To download all the new ports and updates to ports.

And you can run
portversion -v -l "<"
to see what ports of yours need upgrading.

All as root of course.
