Except that nvidia is not likely to ever port their drivers to NetBSD, which means that the only option would be to port nouveau.. Which requires Xorg.

Similarly, the open source 3D drivers are much more up-to-date with Xorg. So if the NetBSD folks are working on the direct rendering manager, then Xorg is the way to go.

So I guess my point would be that you can't separate the decision of XFree86 vs Xorg from the development and support for 3D drivers.
