The default nvi now works with Japanese. I may not have been clear, I meant that in the mid 2000's,
the default FreeBSD's nvi wouldn't input Japanese--IIRC, I think there was a port under Japanese for it, but I couldn't get that working either, and in the end, used vim. However, these days, once I have Japanese input set up, the default vi, that is, the one that comes with the system, inputs Japanese with no extra work.
