That is definitely a technique one should know about, but I think the key word is it's "sometimes the best solution". For me, I don't always know what OS will be booted next, and it would also be easy to forget to make a change. I suppose one could always boot a DOS floppy with fdisk on it, change the active partition, and reboot.
