There is a native X Window screenshot tool called
xwd(1). To display the image you can use
xwud(1). One major disadvantage is that
xwd only can save an image in native X Window dump format and not in something like GIF of JPEG. You would need a tool like ImageMagick to convert the image created by
xwd.
