Doing so will result in you having no linux plugin support in opera (flash, f.e.).
My issue is somewhat different. I have 9.61 installed along with the opera-linuxplugins, I get no error when starting opera, I get sound with f.e. youtube video's, but nothing visual in flash (a step up from <= 9.60 where I also got the error popup and no working flash).
The error appearing in the console is:
/usr/local/share/opera/bin//operapluginwrapper.linux: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/local/lib/compat/libstdc++.so.5: ELF file OS ABI invalid
It's nothing terrible, but if someone knows of a solution.. ;-)
