If you want to copy files between machines using hostnames, then you will need to set up DNS or set the appropriate entries in the
hosts(5) file. And if you think about it, what DNS
(or the hosts(5) file) is doing is figuring out what IP address matches the specified hostname.
Otherwise, you can specify each machine by IP address when copying files about.
