Hi ocicat. First, I wanted to keep track of network usage and apply bandwidth shaping. Second, I didn't want to change the way other users (people living in the house) see the network. Replacing the router with a fancy OpenBSD machine could have met the first goal but not the second. A bridge is capable of this type of monitoring and won't seem intrusive to users afraid of technology.
