Technical minutia aside, imagine the various operating systems as each having a distinct culture. From this perspective, selecting the OS to use is a matter of finding the culture that best matches your demeanor and style.

I see some of the various OS cultures like this:
  • FreeBSD is like a university campus.
  • OpenBSD is like a military base.
  • Enterprise Linux (RedHat) is like a business park.
  • Ubuntu Linux is like Disney World.
  • MS Windows is like a shopping mall.
