I assume you're working at the [ws]console? Does the mouse work when not running mc, i.e., just on a console with the shell prompt? What kind of console are you using, text mode?, VESA framebuffer?, drmkms?

I've only ever gotten wsmoused to work with text consoles, but haven't tried in quite some time.
