Unfortunately that's not very reasonable backrow, it would be a nightmare to have the <video> tags work with every format out there.. as individuals would need to keep obtaining codecs and configuring (..possibly recompiling) the browser each time, or being unable to obtain them at all.. i.e: proprietary stuff.

Firefox includes a Theora/ogg decoder that works on all of their supported platforms, it doesn't depend on any 3rd party library support.. and some sites have encoded their videos in that (..open) format.

Can you imagine having a plethora of sites/browsers supporting the new tag with many opinions on the best codec? how is it any different from a proprietary web using Adobe Flash?
