You appeared, in your first post, to have difficulty with this, due to the size of your partition. FAT16 is limited to 2GB. I agree it's been very stupid.
After all this, I'm asking myself: is suspend/resume that important? Maybe to carry around a laptop it's still better to switch it off.
I'll have to learn how to tell ion to start which apps in which workspace in which window, so that it will be similar to a resume.
