I seem to be able to get 48-50MB/s transfer rates on my 5400 rpm, 40GB ATA drive... unlikely to have a lot of hardware cache.

100Mb/s is 100 Megabits per second, 12.5MB/s.
1000Mb/s is 1 Gigabit per second, 125MB/s.
