How is it that your root partition is full? I still have 375MB free on mine, which is 512MB.
You said that you can't boot without this completing, which implies that something is wrong with your current kernel. If you don't need it, then copy it to another location, possibly your home directory, and delete the original instance from /boot. This will free up enough space for you to install the new kernel, or at least it should.
