Default Trouble changing the resolution in X

After installing xorg from the ports collection, I noticed that the resolution was set to 1024x768. I tried to change the resolution in a number of ways whether it be through editing xorg.conf or using xrandr, but nothing seems to be solving this problem for me.

Here is the output for when I run xrandr:

Code:
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768
default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768 85.0*
   800x600 86.0
   640x480 86.0
It seems that 1024x768 seems to be the maximum resolution according to the output, but I know that my screen can support higher resolutions.
