Potentially, some hardware manufactures design their hardware to be supported with vendors implementation of standards, not the standards themselves.. which results in "quirky" hardware.
On OpenBSD, one the first USB enclosures I bought didn't work.. I could read, but not write to devices attached to it.
It did however, work fine on a OS X system.. and the enclosure I bought after, with a JMicron chipset - worked fine.
Again, best post the dmesg... just to be on the safe side.
