I remember I had once an isssue like this so I dropped using startx script and just did :
xinit /usr/local/bin/gnome-session
it worked fine ..
as for gnome on openbsd-current .. I upgraded two days ago , and installed gnome* , but for some reason I received a dialog box reading :

gnome : can't publish discovery information on the network
I click on the close button there in .. to see a badly shaped monochrome gnome desktop .. (even though I installed the menus/themes/extra ...etc ) ..
kde is working fine though .. you can try your way ..
