Into the cutting-edge stuff, eh Carpetsmoker? I've used the 3Com card you have as well, but it is the only one I have ever had that failed physically. The connector broke off.
My three main FreeBSD boxes are not quite as old, but are far from new: a dual Athlon and two dual Xeons (Prestonias), each with 3GB memory and SCSI drives. One is my desktop, one is a dual-boot development station, and one is a server that runs internal web pages, a couple of moderately-sized databases, and the other usual stuff (IMAP, DNS, print serving).
